HEALTH AND HUMAN RIGHTS FOR VULNERABLE GROUPS

Rights- based approaches promote the preservation of the dignity and removal of discrimination against vulnerable persons and communities.

The term vulnerable refers to susceptibility. Some groups in society are less able to prepare for or recover from a disruptive event. In considering health rights, various groups in society experience inequalities and are unable to access their right to health.
The program on Health and Human Rights for Vulnerable Groups focuses on the extent to which the right to health is enjoyed
  1. Prisoners
  2. Women
  3. HIV and AIDS infected and affected
  4. Mental Health
The extent of realization of the right to health can be assessed by considering four parameters – namely accessibility, availability, acceptability and quality. Within these vulnerable groups, at least one of these elements is a barrier to full realization of the right to health. The program on Health and Human Rights for Vulnerable Groups uses various methods in order to highlight the key health rights, advocate around critical policy issues as well as in some cases contribute towards solutions.
The Prison Total Health Protection conducted a pilot programme at Harare Central and Remand Prisons. The objectives of the program included to create awareness of the right to health among staff and inmates. Some medical support was also provided to contribute towards prisoners realizing the right to health.
