ZADHR COVID-19 Work

Our Work during the COVID-19 Pandemic

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID 19 a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on the 30th of January 2020 after what started as initially an epidemic of a new viral infection caused by the coronavirus was first detected in Wuhan, China. As of 13 July 2020, over 12 685 374 cases have been confirmed and resulted in at least 565,000 deaths.

The situation is even dire in Africa as, while some regions seem to be flattening their infections curve, Africa’s curve is on the rise, with more than a third of countries in Africa doubling their cases over the past month, according to WHO.

With this in mind, the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights intervention is 3 pronged:

  • Support for Health facilities through sourcing of Personal Protective Equipment and medical sundries required in the treatment of COVID-19 in vulnerable areas currently not targeted by most existing fundraising initiatives.
  • Enhancing health professionals’ capacity in responding to COVID-19 through Continuing Medical Education initiatives on COVID-19 via online and on social media as well as health expert-facilitated meetings and peer-to-peer discussions. We are also providing psychosocial support and counselling for health workers involved in COVID-19 response.
  • Strengthening community awareness on prevention and control of COVID-19 through information production and dissemination via popular platforms like social media, radio and newspapers. We are also engaging and training community health workers and influencers on COVID-19 management as well as the distribution of masks and sanitizers to high risk communities and populations
